The function and mission of the Plant Biotechnology Department is to carry out basic and applied research in the field of plant biotechnology to create new plant varieties with high yield and good quality; disease control and acquisition of biologically active secondary substances.
Research directions of the Department of Plant Biotechnology
In vitro propagation and secondary compound acquisition
Research to complete the in vitro propagation process of many species of orchids and ornamental plants by tissue culture techniques. The department has also been developing a process to rapidly multiply the biomass of some medicinal plants such as RED Ha Thu O, Dinh Lang, Ginseng areca, etc. to obtain secondary compounds.
Technical analysis of GMO products and diagnosis of plant diseases
Research and develop diagnostic procedures for diseases caused by viruses and bacteria on plants; detection of genetically modified plants and genetically modified products by molecular biology techniques.
Select and create plant varieties
3.1. Cultivation of pollen grains, pollen bags for breeding new varieties. Research and develop techniques for culturing pollen grains and pollen sacs of plants to create pure lines for breeding and selection of new varieties.
3.2. Application of molecular markers in plant identification and breeding. Research and develop a process to identify and evaluate plant genetic diversity by molecular markers; application of molecular markers in the search for beneficial genetic resources, while supporting the analysis and evaluation of results in the breeding of new varieties.
3.3. Creating new varieties of new plants by transgenic method. Research on gene transfer to create new high-yield and high-quality cultivars that are resistant to diseases and adverse environmental conditions.
